Is This Real Life?

Kamala Pride
Kamala Pride, get it?

When Ayin told me that Joe Biden had dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Kamala Harris, I said, “Ugh, that’s not good. This country will never elect a woman president.”

Was I wrong?

Seems like I may have been wrong.

I was a little kid in the 1960s and came of age in the 70s, and the spirit back then was pretty much everything is changing, and changing for the better. Then, in 1980, Reagan was elected, and in 1982, the deadline passed for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Can you imagine that? A constitutional amendment guaranteeing equal rights for women failed to pass. Because, I guess, “Why do them bitches want rights?!” Know your place bitches.

I was always on the side of women; maybe not a huge surprise considering I’m trans, but I thought it went beyond being on one side or the other, you know? I thought it was about equal rights, and only a monster, or a white man, could be against anyone’s equal rights.

I knew intellectually how awful misogyny and discrimination against women were, but it wasn’t until about a year into hormone replacement therapy that I began to feel it. I felt it because my brain was changing, my outlook on the world was changing, and at the same time, I was experiencing misogyny for the first time at work.

Spoiler alert: knowing something and experiencing it are two different things, cousin.

Well, here we are 42 years after the ERA failed to launch, and we still don’t have constitutionally protected equality. But it looks like we just may have our first woman president. How sweet will it be when she beats that vaguely human-shaped pumpkin casserole?

Will having a woman as president make the passage of an equal rights amendment more likely? A month ago, I would have said, ‘No.’ But that was then; this is now.

The best thing about the current situation is that Harris is handily defeating Trump by countering his cynical doomsday cult fear-mongering with joy and positivity. Positive vibrations. Something the waddling wannabe fascist will never understand.

He can’t fight her because he doesn’t understand her. He can’t defeat her because negativity will never defeat positivity. Doom will never beat hope. And hope and positivity are the specials on the menu today. All you can eat.
